Labor Support & Rest Breaks

My goal is to remain with you through labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period, without a fixed hourly cutoff. I take every reasonable measure to prepare for extended labors and minimize the need for backup relief, but sometimes rest is necessary to continue providing attentive care. If a longer rest period is needed, an arranged backup doula can provide support through a coordinated handoff at no additional cost to your family.

Our Care Commitment
“Every family deserves continuous, evidence-based care, informed choice advocacy, and steady presence from the first contraction through the postpartum sanctuary.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need To Know

Common questions about booking, labor logistics, placenta care, and insurance coverage.

What is the role of a birth doula during labor?
A doula is a non-clinical professional who provides continuous physical comfort, emotional encouragement, and evidence-based information before, during, and just after childbirth. A doula does not replace your partner or medical team — we work alongside your nurses, OB, or midwife to help you remain calm, grounded, and informed.
When should I book doula services in Tri-Cities, Washington?
Most families reach out during their second trimester (around 16–28 weeks). Because I accept a limited number of clients each birth month to guarantee 24/7 on-call availability from 37–42 weeks, booking early ensures your estimated due date is secured on the calendar.
How does 24/7 urgent labor on-call support work?
Starting at 37 weeks through 42 weeks (or whenever your baby arrives), I am on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When labor begins or you have questions about early signs, you call or text me. Once active labor is established or you desire in-person support, I join you at homebirth, birth centers, hospitals, or other agreed location.
Can I use insurance, employer benefits, or HSA/FSA for doula care?
Yes! Many families use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for doula services. Additionally, Rebecca Sullivan is finalizing certification through the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) and direct insurance partnerships are in process. We will confirm your coverage and benefit eligibility prior to beginning care.
How does placenta encapsulation collection and safe handling work?
I hold certified bloodborne pathogen training and a valid Washington Food Handler's permit. Following your birth at homebirth, birth centers, hospitals, or other agreed location, the placenta is stored safely on ice in your cooler. I arrange prompt pickup and process it with sterile, single-client protocols, delivering your finished capsules and keepsakes right to your doorstep.
